Champs deal Wealden’s survival hopes a blow

Wealden Men’s hopes of avoiding relegation to Division 2 of the Sussex League suffered a setback when they entertained reigning champions Adur.

From the early stages the game always looked to be going the visitors’ way as they leapt into a significant lead. Although at the interval Wealden were still in contention on four of the rinks, Adur had held on to their comfortable overall lead and had the five bonus points for the match result in the bag well before the end.

With every point vital for their survival, it was important to pick up as many as possible from the games in play and the teams skipped by Mick Read and Peter Carter both held on to their early leads to come out on top.

Wealden were a shade unlucky not to add to their points tally with the four led by Chris Thomas just losing out over the closing ends to go down by two shots and Alex Parsons’ team losing by five.

In another game the team skipped by Tony Plater found themselves 13 shots down after just six ends but recovered well to finally go down 16-21.

The home clash with fellow strugglers Eastbourne now becomes vital to Wealden’s survival hopes.
