Evans stars as Plums produce their best rugby of the season

Plumpton took a strong team to nearby Ditchling on Saturday and returned easy winners 27-7.

The team was brimming with pace and power and from the start looked to turn around their poor showing a week earlier. Within five minutes the forwards had singlehandedly crashed their way up the pitch, before gaining ball for lightning winger Dan Sherwin to score.

Plums then fell into their usual habit of sitting back for 10 minutes, allowing Ditchling to use a simple four-on-two to score under the posts. The try was converted but it proved the hosts’ only points.

They probably only ventured into Plums’ half no more than twice in the remainder of the game as the visitors played some of their best rugby of the season.

A wonderful blend of forward power and back line pace and accuracy put Ditchling on the back foot and the next try came when second row Alex Aston stole the ball and crashed over, taking two players with him from the back of the line-out. Lewis Beale converted.

Plums made substitutions in the second half but were not disjointed and within five minutes of the half Sherwin grabbed his second score.

The forward power was clearly making a difference and bullish runs by Toby Manning, Brody Forest and Craig Wells posed significant problems for the Ditchling back row.

A further penalty by Lewis Beale almost put the game out of sight before the final nail in the coffin was inserted by Colm Evans, who charged down an attempted chip by fly-half Griffin, and raced over for an easy score.

MoM for Plumpton was explosive centre Colm Evans, with Brody Forest, try-scoring speedster Dan Sherwin and man-mountain Craig Wells also putting in worthy displays.

This week Plumpton travel to high flying Lewes (2.15pm).
