Marlins trio of boys are in winning form for schools
A TRIO of Marlins boys enjoyed success in the Sussex Schools Meet at the K2 in Crawley, where they claimed five wins.
Ollie Goodhew won both 200IM and 100 backstroke, with a 0.64 pb in the backstroke, Ryan Dooley was first in his 200IM and 200 freestyle, as well as third in the 100 breaststroke with a regional qualifying time (RQT), while Jack Payne won the 100 fly and was second in 100 breaststroke, both in RQTs. This was the Marlins swim of the night as Payne admitted it has been a long time since he has swum near that time.
All the girls swam well, producing several pbs: Sophy Croydon–Kempster 1.36 pb back; Georgie Gratton 2.82 pb 100 back; and Naomi Shaw 0.83 pb 100 back. Shaw and Gratton looked almost like syncrhonised swimmers as they contested the backstroke next to each other, with Shaw just touching out Gratton at the finish. Shaw also swam well in her 200 free to get a 4.32 pb.
Marlins newcomer Jennifer Nash achieved a good 1.61 pb in her 200 freestyle. She does not usually enter this event but wanted to check her fitness before the Counties at the end of this month and was delighted.
Also representing their schools were Brittany Croydon Kempster, Emma Shilton, Leah Clarke, Abi Hoiser and Claire Shaw.
Also at the weekend, three swimmers attended the long distance county championships.
Jess Matlock (11) competed in 800m Free, gaining a fantastic 32 sec pb to take fifth in her age group, while Ryan Dooley (13) and Ollie Mayhew (14) both competed in the gruelling 1500m freestyle. Dooley was fifth overall and second in age group with a 37 sec pb and Mayhew won age group and junior champs with a 30 sec pb.
