THE top three all recorded 4-1 home wins against Division 1 opposition to mean there was no change at the top of the Mid Sussex Bar Billiards League.
But Hurst B duly sealed the Division 1 title from a long way out as they won 3-2 at Eight Bells. It went all the way, however, as the hosts drew first blood when Adam Squires beat Dazza. Hurst bounced back as Colin Robbins beat Rob Driver and Steve King put in a 5k which proved too much for Trevor Appleby. Family pride was restored when Ros Appleby saw off Chris Kirkham but the decider went Hurst’s way as John Lear defeated Tony Driver.
Champions and leaders Mill House Zeds are proving hard to catch and they soon underlined the point by taking the first three frames as Alan Downs, Barry Timson and Clive Thompson accounted for Peter Geal, TSO and Roger Wallbank respectively. A good performance by Matt Geal against Johnny Haigh then averted the whitewash but normal service was resumed in high definition as Graham Daniels hit a great 9k past Manly Harveys.
Second-placed Brewers Arms started with a flourish against the Services as David Page put 5k past Terry Gasson and an 8k from Dilly proved too much for Sparky. Mick Kirwan kept the match result on hold by beating Jock Jeffrey but it was match won when Derek Taylor beat Ron Wales. The Farmer took the last leg courtesy of a 6k against Andy Guy.
Hurst A matched the two teams they are chasing although they did it the hard way after Lorraine Hall was undone by a canny game from Cock Inn’s Steve Smith in the opener. A 5k from Peter Edwards against Jan Smith soon levelled and then Peter Hall beat Huw Lincoln. Victory was then completed in style as Rob Hall rattled up 8k against Adam Cheesmur and a personal best 5k from Jenny Edwards saw off Chris Smith.
Brewers Bravos had a similar win at Watermill B although the single loss came in the last and not in the first. Gavin Boyd spared Bees’ blushes when defeating Piers O’Sullivan. Earlier, Lynne M-R won a see-saw battle with Mark Ridley and then Bravo’s 6k+ was just enough to see off Kim Stenning’s 5k+. Spud Spurrier completed victory by beating the battling Flying Dutchman and then Nikki Hinkins had a good win over Paul Blackburn.
The only whitewash of the day brought Greyhound to three figures as they destroyed visiting Horns Lodge. Ted Stringer took the first from Kevin Stevens and the trend continued as Geff Fairs and Neil Burchell beat Peter Shaw and Sam Hall respectively, Paul Goodwin took the fourth from a black pegging Jim McGlenn and Trevor Rees beat Dave Tiffin.
The other match ended in 3-2 home win for Laughing Fish but there are no details of their victory over Woolpack.
