Ollie leads the way

OLLIE MAYHEW made a great start to the new year with the pick of the performances as Marlins sent 25 swimmers to contest the popular Tom Handley two-day meet at the Prince Regent Pool, Brighton, over the weekend.

The 10-year-old attacked from the start of his 200m backstroke event to set a seven-second personal best (pb) and go a full 10 seconds inside the county qualifying time (CQT).

Goodhew kept up his fine form by not only achieving two regional qualifying times (RQT) in the 100m freestyle and 200m IM but also gaining two national qualifying times (NQT) in the 100m and 200m backstroke.

Other CQTs were achieved by team-mates Issy Watson in 200m backstroke, Holly James 100m backstroke, Sophy Croydon-Kempster 200m backstroke, Naomi Shaw 100m freestyle and Neave Scott 50m and 200m freestyle.

RQTs came from Claire Shaw (100m free), Ryan Dooley (200m and 100m breast) and Emma Shilton (100m breast), while trophy winners were Shilton, Guy Cooper, Croydon-Kempster, Dooley, Shaw and Goodhew.

Notable pbs were achieved by Croydon-Kempster, Dooley, Mayhew and Shilton.
