Plumpton hosted Heathfield and Waldron at the weekend and won 17-7.

Plumpton fielded a weakened side, bereft of many first team players and it showed, as the game turned into a forgetable first half, neither side creating opportunities or gaining the upper hand.

The second half however was a different game, a few tactical changes in key positions allowed renewed imputus for Plumpton which provided a spectacle for the large crowd of spectators.

Heathfield were unable to get into Plumpton’s 22 during most of the 2nd hald as massive tackles from Rob Blake, Alex Aston and Craig Wells put the Plumpton pack into a dominating position. Strong ball carries from Ben Carter, Ben Turney and Dave Ashplant added to a front foot game that allowed Plumpton to overpower the smaller Heathfield pack, with number 8 Nigel Box grabbing a brace of tries inside 15 minutes. Converted by Lewis Beale.

The final try from Plumpton however could be try of the season, as a penalty inside Plumptons half was quickly taken by Beale. Prop Craig Wells crashed through at least 6 tackles before offloading to speedster Darren Thomas, who sidestepped his opposite winger ten yards from the line before outpacing the full-back to score in the corner.

Heathfield found a late consolation try, but it was too late. Final score 17-7. Man-of-the-Match Tom Gelling. This weekend Plumpton travel to Littlehampton, k.o 2.30pm.
