SARAH CORNEY starred as Burgess Hill 2nds turned in a great performance to hammer visitors Penguins 7-0 at the Triangle on Saturday.
With Corney controlling midfield, it was no surprise when she opened the scoring from a short corner routine.
It was Corney who struck again before a goal in open play came from Jane Roweth.
In the second half some great forward play by Lucy Matthews and Rachel Vans Agnew continued to put the Penguins defence on the rack and goals by Matthews and Tanya Rayward made it 5-0.
Corney completed her hat-trick with a well struck short corner and the scoring was rounded off by a goalline deflection by Roweth.
Hill are likely to face a sterner test when they visit Brighton in a crucial clash this Saturday.
Team: Wright, Gillham, Payne, Threadgold, Henderson, Branagan, Corney, Rayward, Matthews, Roweth, Lewis, Vans Agnew.
The 1st team continue to keep pace with Hailsham at the top of the table and with two games in hand they are well placed to seal the title.
Their latest success was by a 5-2 scoreline at Southwick, where they were quick out of the blocks and went ahead with a goal by Lynne Simmons.
Captain Georgia Aloof soon doubled the tally with a short corner strike and a good passing move then enabled Simmons to grab her second.
But Wickers always battle hard and they pulled one back before Hill restored their three-goal advantage with Freya Ward’s deft touch at the far post from a powerful Aloof strike.
In the second half the hosts upped their game and pegged it back to 4-2 as they kept Hill pinned down for lengthy spells.
But an accurate pass by the skipper enabled Simmons to complete her hat-trick and put Hill in good heart for this Saturday’s home clash with a much-improved Brighton side (10.30).
There was no such joy for the 3rd XI, however, as they lost 2-5 to a somewhat aggressive Middleton & Bognor team, who were older and stronger than their visitors.
Hill were frustrated by some unusual umpiring but despite the scoreline, Jane Prideaux had an outstanding game in goal to keep it respectable.
Hill soon found themselves 2-0 down but with Jodie Gower and Florence Williams working tirelessly in midfield, they managed to pull one back when Michaela Daniels drove into the box and carried the ball over the line.
With Wendy Caddye, Marie-Louise Kersley and captain Sally Vans Agnew doing well at the back, Hill managed to stay in touch up until half time.
But after the break Bognor struck three times before Hill again rallied, with Sophia Davies pulling a goal back when she followed up a Daniels shot against the bar after a great cross by Becs Parker.
Also playing their part in a plucky performance were Tanisha Bolton, Amelia Luckett and Holly Tasker.
