Still only one point in it as Brewers survive derby test
JUST a single point continues to separate the top two after the second half of the league season got underway last week.
Chasing Brewers Arms won the second Brewers derby when they edged out Bravos 3-2, while champions and current leaders triumphed by the same score in a tight match at United Services.
Spud Spurrier hit the best of the night at the Brewers, where his 7k put paid to the hopes of David Page to give Bravos the first leg. It was level after the next as Bravo just got the better of Derek Taylor but Bravos regained their lead when Paul M-R beat Jock Jeffrey. There was no room for error for Arms from there and they duly obliged as Dilly beat Nikki Hinkins and then captain, The Farmer, saw off Lynne M-R.
In contrast Zeds were never headed at the Services and, in fact, built a 2-0 lead as a 6k from Graham Daniels was just too much for Sparky’s 5k and then another 6k, this time from Alan Downs, saw off Ron Wales. A plucky fight back was launched by the free-scoring Terry Gasson as he put 5k past Johnny Haigh and it was then all square when Andy Guy played well to beat Clive Thompson. The decider went to Barry Timson as his 5k saw off Mick Kirwan.
Hurst A took advantage of Greyhound being on a rest week to move up to third place with a 4-1 win in another derby match at Hurst B. The Giff and Pete Hall had a good scrap before Hall came out on top and the best followed as Rob Hall’s 6k accounted for Dazza. Lorraine Hall got a 5k score to leave Chris Kirkham out in the cold but the whitewash was averted as Colin Robbins hit 5k past Jenny Edwards. There was another good tussle in the last before a 6k from Peter Edwards was just too good for Steve King.
There was one whitewash and that went to The Cock Inn as they saw off visitors Woolpack, who fell further adrift at the bottom of Division 1. Huw Lincoln and Chris Smith beat Nigel Bransby and Jan Hinkins respectively before Anne Stockinger fought bravely to keep the match alive before going down to Jan Smith. Woollies were again out of luck when Malc Fuller was edged out by Adam Cheesmur and then the brush was applied when Steve Smith beat Lynn Storr.
Trevor Appleby did avert the whitewash when he beat Chase Newman in the middle frame for Eight Bells at the Plough but apart from that it was one-way traffic as Richard Todd, Dave Knight, Jan Bithell and Darren Newman defeated Ros Appleby, Neil Higgins, Tony Driver and Rob Driver.
The other two matches ended in 3-2 home wins, with St Francis doing it the hard way as they came from 2-0 down at home to Watermill B. Bees newbie, The Old Fella, did enough at the start of the frame to get the result against Roger Wallbank and then Gavin Boyd had a tough win against Foggers. But Saints got a foothold as Bob Ellis beat Paul Blackman and Manly Harveys took out Kim Stenning. It was captain TSO who completed the comeback win with 5k against The Flying Dutchman.
Horns Lodge had a welcome win by the same margin against Laughing Fish and were never headed. They took a 2-0 lead as Ron Sheridan and Kevin Stevens beat Andy Brooks and Ray Carpenter but in frame 3 an 8k from Aitch was too much for Dave Tiffin. Normal service was resumed when Chris Farrow sealed the match at the expense of Jim Asford but the Fish did at least have the last word as Les Whiteman defeated Peter Shaw.
