Suffering Middies end with nothing

Mid Sussex III's (red) v Hailsham (blue)

MID SUSSEX men’s 1st team got what they deserved as they slipped to a 3-2 home defeat against Canterbury on Saturday.

The hosts surrendered a 2-1 lead and after conceding an own goal equaliser, two defenders then left the ball for each other to present the visitors with a gift winner just two minutes from time.

Middies started slowly and never got above three-quarter pace as a deflected short corner put them behind.

But they were soon level when the visiting keeper and a defender somehow contrived to be beaten by Will Richardson’s mishit.

In the second half Tom Wylie deflected another Richardson shot past the stranded keeper and the game looked there for the taking.

But it was not to be although probably neither side deserved to win a scrappy match.

The 2nds are battling for the title and did their hopes a power of good with a 6-4 victory over Lewes 4ths.

Severe frost delayed the start by an hour but it was worth the wait for Middies, despite having only the bare 11 players.

Marc Livesley, Dan Cocks, Hayden James, Mike Dovey and Justin Maynard were all on target and with the two teams below them both losing, the locals are now four points clear and well on target for back-to-back promotions.

This Saturday they entertain Worthing 3rds at St Paul’s , with a 1.30pm start.

Team: Jason Morgan, Stephen Hillier, David Heine, Justin Maynard, Stephen Rusling (GK), Alex Stirling, Dan Cocks, Mike Dovey, James Ferguson, Hayden James, Marc Livesley.

The 3rd team went down 1-3 to a strong and physical Hailsham 2nd team despite making a bright start at the Triangle.

It was swift breaks and clinical finishing by Hailsham’s skilful forwards that put the hosts 2-0 down and chasing the game from a fairly early stage.

Middies did create chances but seemed over eager and far too often the final pass let them down.

It was a little better in the second half when they showed more composure and looked a more cohesive unit.

Grant did score to give them parity in the second half and the team continues to improve slowly each week.

Field was MoM and mentions should also go to Hill, Muldoon, keeper Gow and Gordon.

This Saturday the team play Worthing 5ths at Worthing Leisure Centre (11.35).

The team for that match will be chosen from: Gow, Hill Grant, Muldoon, Manger, Jones, Field, Bailey, Lake, Taylor, Felton, Collins, Trigwell. N/A: Skleton, Ward. Umpire Gordon Young.

Club training has restarted at the Triangle and players are urged to attend.

Meanwhile, the colts meet for training on Sunday mornings.
