Haywards Heath Harriers hosted their annual cross country at the weekend, the Hickstead Gallop, at the All England Jumping Course, the penultimate race in the 2012 West Sussex fun run league.
Conditions were more than muddy and slippery underfoot but this did not deter 235 entrants in the 8k senior race, won by Matthew Domigan of Worthing Harriers of in a time of 27.23.
For the club the first finisher was Jason Russell a good 18th in 32.02, chased hard by Mark Davies in 32.06.
Barry Tullet put in a fine run to finish 25th in 33.15 and also in the top fifty were Nick Jarvis in 34.32 and Mark Armitage with 35.08.
The ladies winner was Hailsham Harrier’s Olivia Webb in 33.49 and first for the club was Julia Jarvis 12th lady and 104th overall in 39.13, followed by Julie Essex 29th lady and 150th overall in 42.25
Other results: T Swainson 73rd 36.21, S Horn 98th 38.56, R Purchase 46.56, Justine Denyer 47.20, J Nicoll 50.22, M Holdstock 54.44 and Jenny Denyer 57.04.
The Junior races proved popular with over 30 entrants in each category.
In the U16 Juniors 1600m race the club’s own Simeon Cousins won the race in a close battle with Steyning AC’s Harry Neale with a time of 6.04.
Brittany Croyden Kempster was also first female in 6.39, just one second ahead of fellow Harrier Neave Scott, for third and fourth overall respectively.
Patrick Kenward was fifth with 6.50 and Chris Curnock also made it into the top ten with 7.24.
Other results: F Lonie 7.44, T Jarvis 7.54, J Hurst 8.14, F Chamberlain 8.21 and D Bryant 8.49.
The U11’s 1,000m girls race was won by Harrier’s Francesca Pitcher in 5.00, and also running for the club was E Rogers in 6.19.
The U11’s boys race was won by Ben Walters of Lewes AC in 4.04, but the Harriers took second, third and fourth places with Joseph Martin in 4.17, Louis Chasteauneuf in 4.23 and Matthew Christian in 4.31.
Also running for the club were H Bracknebury 4.57, J Essex 5.14, T Henshaw 5.17 and O Mills 5.40.
The U9’s 600m girls race was won by Lily-Mae Bliss-Tomlinson from Harland Primary School in 3.06. For the club Meadow Davies 4.09, Josie Henshaw 4.26 and Jemima Davies 5.43 were all running.
The U9’s boys race was won by Finlay Stewart from Harlands Primary School in 2.58

Elsewhere Phil Payne improved his half marathon personal best by over two minutes at the Oxford Half Marathon to finish an impressive 98th out of over 4000 runners in 1.25.48 (chip timed).
Jane Brammar gained yet another weekly 5k park run personal best with 21.07, as did Julian Boyer with 21.01 and Joshua Essex 28.50.
There was first time runs for Nathaniel Collins with 42.43 and Lorna Collins with 42.51.
