What a start to the new year...

IT HAS been a wonderful start to the new year for Mid Sussex Martial Arts School, culminating with judo instructor Shelly Jackson (left) medalling at the prestigious Commonwealth Championships at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
The year had begun with annual Misogi and chinkon-kishin with similar-minded members from across various disciplines within the dojo on January 1.
This was followed a week later by the annual Kagami Biraki to brighten the arrival of the new year and renew determination for the activities ahead.
To complete January, MSMAS held a Budo Weekend, focusing on the traditional sword-based art of Japan. Highlight of this was the presence of Carl Long Kyoshi (right) who flew in from America to lead a full day of iaido and there was also kendo led by Shuichi Tereshima Renshi from Japan.
During the weekend, James Bibby Renshi led yet another spirit training session on the beach before dawn.
