Questions remain unanswered at football meeting

THE extent of the extra mileage involved in the proposed changes to non-League football at Step 5 have been revealed.

Under the proposals, the Sussex League would lose its status at that level and clubs placed in new regional leagues, involving more clubs and further distances to travel.

Hassocks, in London South West for example, would face a season’s mileage of more than 1,400 as opposed to only 938 in the County League.

It will also mean more fixtures and the longer journeys midweek would necessitate players taking more time off from work.

County League clubs still have numerous questions unanswered and according to one club chairman, not one was answered at the first of four regional meetings held in Thurrock earlier this month.

There were 10 County League clubs represented and they were by far the most vocal. According to one source, half of those clubs did ask questions but not many other leagues appeared to seek much clarification.

Clearly there is a distinct feeling amongst local clubs that it is a done deal and with so many questions unanswered, that is unsettling.

Other prominent questions are how the proposals were formulated and who made them, what is the FA’s reasons for the restructuring and what are the benefit to clubs and what will happen if many clubs decide they do not want to transfer to the new leagues.

As things stand currently the new London SW League would be formed of the following 24 clubs: Arundel, Badshot Lea, Banstead Ath, Chessington & Hook, Colliers Wood, Dorking, East Grinstead, Epsom & Ewell, Guildford City, Hanworth Villa, Hassocks, Horley Town, Horsham YMCA, Lancing, Lingfield, Mole Valley SCR, Molesey, Raynes Park Vale, Redhill, Shoreham, South Park, St Francis Rgrs, Three Bridges and Worthing Utd.
