Squash at the Weald
The Weald fourth team had a good start to the second half of the season as they beat East Grinstead 4ths 3-2 and banked 17 points out of a possible 20. Marco Soares persevered with deep drives to force his opponent into mistakes, gaining the second but losing his dominance of the court to go down 1-3.
After a slow start before he found the full width of the court to pass his opponent, Mike Crisp concentrated on full length drives and drops to win briskly in three, while Bill Baxter ran hard to keep the ball in play in his match. After a tense fourth game which could have gone either way, Baxter emerged the 3-1 victor.
Sarah Naish edged ahead to take the tie-break in her second game to win in three to give Weald the necessary strings for the night’s victory.
David Beecroft then went for additional points in the last match but despite keeping the ball in play, he failed to maintain the pressure on his opponent until a timely change to his old red squash shoes at two games down brought him back into the match. With more attacking play he drew level but despite exhaustion now showing in his opponent’s game, Beecroft failed to continue the momentum as he lost the decider.
The result swung the other way as the 3rds lost 2-3 at Brighton Rackets.
This time Beecroft changed to his red shoes as he trailed 1-2 and it paid off as he out-played his opponent, saving the match in a last minute dash of acrobatics at the back of the court.
After marching smartly into a 2-0 lead, Naish tired and her opponent started to find the back corners to seal a comeback win.
Trevor Morgan started with a burst of energy, taking his opponent to the tie-break before struggling for points in the next two, losing 0-3.
And after losing his first two games, Jon Barr appeared to be following suit. However, he then started to dominate the match as his opponent tired, and with more use of drops and boasts banked the next three games to win 3-2. Finally Dave Jump had a thriller as he was forced into the back corners, restricting his normal drops, and finally went down in straight games despite taking the third to a tie break.
To complete a busy week, Morgan, Beecroft and Naish helped the 4ths beat Dolphin 5ths 4-1.
Morgan suffered the only defeat as Mike Crisp came from 0-2 down and Simon Young blossomed to win 3-1 after a sticky start.
