Squash at the Weald Club

The Weald first team were well and truly beaten in their first match of the week, taking only four points away from their encounter against David Lloyd 1.

Three of those were earned by the steady play of Julian Drage, while Mark Pearson took the remaining point as he started well to win the first before, like most of his team-mates, succumbing to the superior play of the home team.

However, the 1sts made amends for this as they banked a well fought win against Corals 3rds, with Drage once again heading the charge as he won in four after a number of long and testing rallies.

Pearson made short work of his opponent, forcing him into the far corners of the court and winning in three.

With the top players facing a huge challenge against the superior abilities of Corals, any chances of a Weald win rested on Mark Wheeler’s shoulders. Initially he was outplayed but determinedly pulled himself back level at 1-1 with a tense tie-break success. With both players picking up virtually impossible drops and playing marathon rallies, it was Wheeler’s superior stamina that enabled him to seal a 3-1 win.

As expected, Joe Mack and Pete Berry struggled to accumulate points, both losing in three despite a number of good rallies.

The 4th team lost to Lewes 2nds in a see-saw match where Mike Crisp and Sarah Naish swept to wins in three, while Bill Baxter struggled to recover tricky drop shots, losing in three.

With a niggling foot injury, Simon Young failed to dominate the shots in his game, losing in three, and David Beecroft started well to take the first game but then struggled to pick up tight drops to lose in four.
