Top honour for Julia

Karate teacher Julia Turley, who runs traditional karate schools throughout Mid Sussex, has been honoured by the head of her karate style.

Julia travelled to Finland to visit Soke Tamotsu, head of the international Shorinjyru karate federation, and was confirmed as head of the England arm of the organisation.

Julia, a black belt of 25 years standing, joined Soke Tamotsu in Finland at the invitation of the Finnish Shorinjyru association.

After a gruelling three days of intensive work, Julia was awarded 5th Dan (fifth grade of black belt with the title Shihan) in the Renshinkan style. Soke Tamotsu also honoured Julia with the appointment of Honbujo (country leader) – the only female Renshinkan karate practitioner to achieve this honour in the world. The Shorinjyru organisation boasts 500,000 members around the world.

Shihan Julia said: "I am extremely proud to be a student of Soke Tamotsu, a world renowned 10th Dan. He is an inspiring teacher and dedicates fees from all his international teaching duties to raising money for his charitable foundation which provides education for children in India. "

Visiting Finland was the first step in the establishment of strong links between Julia's English school and Finnish karate students (karateka). The head of the Finnish association will pay a reciprocal visit to England next year.

Shihan Julia will visit Kagoshima in Japan for training in 2009, and Soke Tamotsu will make an inspection visit to England in the same year. She is pictured with him right.

Preparations are also well underway for the England Renshinkan karate team to compete in the World Friendship Tournament in Japan in 2010.
