Under-par Heath hit for six
HAYWARDS HEATH 1st team crashed to a 6-2 home defeat against Premier Division leaders London Corinthians on Sunday but know that on a better day they could have matched their talented visitors.
But despite plenty of endeavour, Heath just did not click and defensive errors were ruthlessly punished as their 100 per cent home record was emphatically ended.
The young visitors opened brightly but Julie Hawthorne and Heath’s player-of-the-match Gill McPhee kept them at bay for 20 minutes. Then an error ended with a well directed shot and 10 minutes later Gill Scovell was beaten again by a long range lob.
Two goals in a minute then effectively ended the contest but Heath started to pick up and when Ange McPhee won a free kick, Natalie Bagwell’s direct effort reduced the deficit.
After the break Hawthorne did remarkably well to keep the ball from crossing the line but Heath fell further behind before the arrival of young sub Sadie Ashby enabled them to reply. Ashby was the scorer of her fifth goal in six first team games as she followed up an Alex Southgate effort that came back off the bar.
Last-ditch defending then kept Corinthians at bay until a sixth goal arrived 15 minutes from time.
Heath still had chances, with Gill McPhee going close with a lob, sub Karen Bridgewater hitting a post and Claire Green firing over.
This Sunday Heath make the short trip to take on local rivals Hassocks (2).
Heath: Gill Scovell, Sian Ford-Hunt (capt), Gill McPhee, Julie Hawthorne, Laura Collins (Claire Green, 65), Brid Carroll (Karen Bridgewater, 65), Jenny Weller, Ange McPhee, Alex Southgate, Leigh-Anne Covey, Nat Bagwell (Sadie Ashby, 60 mins).
