Keymer and Hassocks 1st XI sealed their third straight East Sussex league victory on Saturday with a close win away at Hailsham.
After the start was delayed due to rain the hosts won the toss and chose to bowl first in favourable conditions. Keymer’s top order failed to get going and it was a stubborn and gritty contribution by skipper Alex Brakell (30) supported by some lower order runs that allowed Keymer to post a total of 128 all out. Andrew Anthony was the pick of the home bowlers taking 4-36.
With a low total on the board it was imperative Keymer’s bowlers came out firing to give them any chance of extending their unbeaten run this season.
Things however didn’t go to plan for the visitors as Hailsham captain Matt Dawber looked set to see his side home with a quick and destructive 51 runs. But it was the introduction of off-spinner Andrew Westgate that turned the tables, from a commanding position the hosts collapsed with Westgate picking up 7-28 runs and spinning Keymer to a 9 run victory.
Keymer and Hassocks 2nd XI also picked up an important victory at home against Linden Park CC. After being asked to bat first the home side battled through difficult conditions to post a score of 106 all out, with the main contributions coming from Peter Finch (21) & Nathan Goodby (21). In reply, wickets fell regularly for the visitors with only Jake Spibey (37) resisting the Keymer attack. Skipper Patrick Corrigan sealed the win taking 6 wickets for 52 runs as the visitors fell to 95 all out.
Keymer 3’s hosted local side Ansty 4’s but were unable to share the fate of Keymer’s other Saturday sides. Batting first keymer managed to post 132-7 declared as Skipper Ross Watkins made 41, supported by Paul Duplock (24) and Navakaran Sivalingam (20). With a low total on the board Keymer’s bowlers battled hard to force a victory the highlight of which was young Nick Kitchen’s 4 wickets for 11 runs. However strong performances from Thomas Smith (41) and Steven Jarvis (37) allowed Ansty to reach the total for the loss of 8 wickets and complete a close win.
