Monday's fire was started deliberately in a store room at the back of the derelict building on the Princess Royal Hospital site - the third arson attack on the premises in the past 18 months.
Haywards Heath firemen received a report that children were seen in the building but it was empty when they arrived. They say if the front of the premises, where there are traces of asbestos, had been targeted, nearby residents would have been evacuated.
The hall, which is due to be demolished to make way for housing, has become an eyesore with graffiti and scorch marks on its walls. It was formerly used by social groups and the WRVS for its Meals-on-Wheels service.
