While most of us are tucked up in bed at 5am, Hassocks pensioner Derek Earl is pounding the streets for his 21st London Marathon.

Derek from Manor Avenue, who turns 73 in June, is raising money for Chestnut Tree House near Arundel, the only children's hospice in Sussex.

Derek, who has a super fit athlete's heart rate of 57 beats per minute, has run the equivalent of 209 full marathons and raised more than £50,000 for good causes.

Derek, who runs about 50 miles per week, is modest about his many achievements which, over the years, have included running from Lands End to John O'Groats and completing a journey of 500 miles across the Pyrenees.

He said: "I love turning my energy towards helping other people who are far more deserving. People in Hassocks have been so supportive; I do the leg work but they're the team."
