A woman and her two children escaped from their home this morning (Tuesday) after a fire started in a first floor bedroom.

More than 25 firefighters went to the scene in Burchetts Close, Haywards Heath, just after 11.15am.

Smoke could be seen pouring out of the top floor of the semi-detached house from the centre of the town and fire engines were sent from Burgess Hill, Hurstpierpoint and Haywards Heath.

The woman, who was asleep at the time, called the fire service on her mobile phone after getting herself, her children aged one and three, and a friend's dog, out of the house.

She told the Mid Sussex Times that she had been asleep at the time but was woken by the smell of smoke.
