One of the first dynamos to light up a house in Brighton has been installed among the exhibits at the new Sussex Heritage Centre in Hassocks.
The dynamo was owned in the 1880s by Magnus Volk, creator of Brighton's famous Volk's Electric Railway.
The renowned inventor installed it in the garden shed of his home in Preston Road and powered it with a gas engine.
Both the dynamo and the gas engine are owned by the Volk's Electric Railway Association, which has lent them to the soon-to-open Sussex Heritage Centre at South Downs Nurseries at Stonepound in Hassocks.
The heritage centre, which is due to open on April 5, is being built by South Downs owner Jonathan Tate who is gathering together farming machinery, craftsmen's tools and industrial gadgets that he hopes will tell the story of the skills that existed in the area years ago.
