New parking meters across Mid Sussex are still causing disruption throughout the area as machines continue to break down or get stuck in a foreign language.
Motorists and traders have blasted the new parking meters, which were installed to prevent people passing on their car parking tickets, and one shopping centre manager has said the complicated ticketing process is driving shoppers away.

Mid Sussex Distict Council this week said that it is listening to the feedback and will be taking all comments on board.

The council has spent £130,000 on introducing the machines, which it claims will prevent fraud by stopping people passing on tickets to one another or using discarded tickets, improve reliability and add extra security.

However, motorists have struggled to use the new machines and queues are still forming in the car parks.

For a full report see tomorrow's Mid Sussex Times.

Fraudulant Parking Charges?
---------------------------
In view of this jobsworth approach to parking charges and the use of ill chosen, inadequate, equipment that has wasted ratepayers money, is losing money on less full car parks, (I went elsewhere) and is wasting shoppers time, plus overcharging them, I think the matter of parking charges, like those previous bank charges, is long overdue for a judicial review. We would then get a ruling on who is perpetrating the fraud. The motorist or the local authority.

Parking charges are published on the notice boards and if appropriate parking meters and barrier equipment were installed, the motorists would be charged for the parking time they use. Instead of that, inferior equipment is being used (yes I know it costs less)
together with large penalty charge threats, to extort extra money from motorists.

Consider the motorist who normally expects, and usually does, complete their shopping within a one hour. But shopping time being notoriously difficult to be sure of and the threat of a grossly over the top monetary penalty for overstaying, ensure that very often the motorist will be forced to buy time he normally does not need.

So, for example, the motorist is forced to buy two hours parking when mostly he uses only one hour or less.

The local authority then keeps the money charged for that unused hour and goes on to charge yet again for that parking space at probably double what is needed by the next parker.

In my view it is the local authority who is being fraudulant. Just because this practice is widespread does not make it right.
