Their haunting cries are unmistakable. But after two years of waking up to them, some bleary-eyed residents are crying fowl and the peacocks are being given their marching orders.
With their spectacular plumage, they have become a familiar sight in the side streets of Hurstpierpoint as they strut up and down and perch on roofs.
But it seems the extended family have now outstayed their welcome after ruffling a few too many feathers.
Sleep-deprived villagers say they are fed up with the screeching wake-up calls at 4.30am, birds' mess and damage to cars and gardens caused by their noisy neighbours.
And there have been increasing complaints about the males attacking cars and scratching paintwork.
A recent public meeting heard the birds had gone 'feral' and had been pecking and head-butting cars after mistaking their reflections as rival males.
Environmental health officers from Mid Sussex District Council have now teamed up with the parish council to give the birds their marching orders. Cages have been left in people's gardens and they are hoping to round up all of the remaining birds and rehome them near Lewes.
