VILLAGERS cheered on thousands of cyclists as they began their steep ascent of Ditchling Beacon on Sunday (June 21).

Thirty thousand cyclists took part in this year's London to Brighton Bike Ride for the British Heart Foundation, and their efforts raised more than £4.3 million for the charity.

Police say there were a number of casualties but no-one was seriously hurt.

Roads through the heart of Mid Sussex were gridlocked for a time, while diversions were in place for the ride.

Watch cyclists get a soaking from local children in our video report.
