Two Mid Sussex villages are trying to make a difference amid a growing awareness of the horrific impact of our throw-away culture.
As well as the environmental cost of landfilling bags used for an average of 12 minutes before being thrown away, plastic detritus is having a devastating effect on wildlife.

Marine wildlife such as seabirds, turtles, whales and dolphins are particularly vulnerable to this type of litter and are literally choking to death.

Forest Row took the lead last month when 100 free jute bags were given out to kick off the campaign with the support of the parish council and traders.

In Hassocks volunteers at charity shop Humanity at Heart have launched a campaign and are appealing to the village to make a stand and become a plastic bag free zone.
