REVIEW: A beautiful version of Fauré's Requiem at Christ's Hospital

The highlight of this year’s Angus Ross Memorial concert was the most widely loved of all the Requiems, Fauré’s Requiem.

Angus Ross was educated at CH from 1930-37 when he was a drummer in the band and timpanist in the orchestra.

The Angus Ross Fund was set up after his death in 1984 and, as music was very important to him, the income from the fund helps to support an annual concert bearing his name, which involves as many of Christ’s Hospital’s pupils as possible.

Under the baton of director of music Andrew Cleary, and in the setting of CH’s ‘Big School’, this year’s concert was no exception. The school’s Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia and Chapel Choir joined forces with the CH Choral Society and special guest soprano Alexandra Stevenson and baritone John Hancorn to create a serene but uplifting version of this haunting Requiem.

Andrew Cleary said: “Fauré’s Requiem is a bold work and it was most superbly performed. The Angus Ross Memorial Fund provides a wonderful opportunity for CH to present a concert every year of this calibre.”

At the concert, Liz Lancaster, chairman of the CH Choral Society, presented two pupils with a bursary award towards their musical studies.
