John said: “The exhibition comes from a project I set myself 15 months ago, to put one life drawing, every day through 2016, online (as a daily tweet, as Facebook post and a daily addition to a gallery on my website.

“I managed to keep it up, and of course felt supported by likes and shares when they appeared not always for the ones I felt were best. When in Brighton, I tend to do up to half a dozen life drawings each week. A very few drawings in this show are many years old, but the vast bulk from the past few years, one a couple of weeks ago.

“Some were done in seconds, 30 second concentrated looking and then 30 seconds quick sketch. Some were up to two hours. But every image here is done entirely with a model in the studio and none is developed afterwards, none worked on subsequently. This is my definition of a sketch.

“I said ‘when in Brighton’ as I tend to spend one third or more of each year in Italy, where with my wife I have been running a very successful cultural history tour company, Cognoscenti Travel. In recent years too much work and we finally called it a day at the end of 2016.

“A core interest is in looking and ways of seeing. I had a photographic exhibition in the same House of Friendship in Lewes, and also in Italy in 2015, entitled On the Impossibility of Seeing what is in Front of the Eyes. We often don’t notice what is in front of our eyes, especially double images, shadows and reflections. We edit out, and photographs can be revealing.”
