DESCENDANTS of a heroic Worthing woman who rescued a young boy from drowning 100 years ago gathered to commemorate her bravery.
Christine Walford was 17 years old when she risked her life to pull a lad from the sea off the Eastbourne coast, a courageous act for which she was decorated by the Royal Humane Society.
Christine went on to marry Charles Green and settle in Worthing, where the couple were twice selected as mayor and mayoress, in 1946 and 1950.
Alderman Charles Green was the proprietor of Ryland's Ladies Outfitters, in Warwick Street, while Christine was involved with many charitable organisations including Wraysbury Home for the Blind.
She died in Worthing in 1965 leaving three sons; John, Morris and Brian, who all married and had children.
On August 16, 21 family members gathered on Worthing beach to toast with champagne the 100th anniversary of the rescue.
The party included two daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Some family members had travelled from Scotland, Devon and even Australia to attend the occasion.
