Choir’s major success

The Cantatrice Voices from Steyning perform at Adastra Hall, Keymer Road, Hassocks, on Saturday on the back of notable success.

Under the direction of Zoe Peate and with pianist Laura Skuce, the choir travelled to Bournemouth to take part in the Bournemouth Competitive Music Festival.

“The Adult Choral Classes were held at the beautiful Pavilion Theatre and hosted the choirs from 10am right through to the evening,” Zoe said.

“It was the first time the choir had taken part so they were unsure of the standard they were up against and were understandably nervous. Cantatrice had chosen to compete in two classes – Songs from the Shows/Light opera and Part Songs.

“The surprise on our faces and the elation when we won our first class was just tremendous, and we were presented with a large cup and certificate. After a laze in the sunshine and lunch the choir took part in the Part Song class. Here we were up against some much younger contenders whose rhythmic detail was awesome but were followed by a beautiful performance by Rainham Ladies choir from Essex.

“Cantatrice took a very respectable third in this class but, more than that, we had been given some fantastic feedback from the judge and a whole day’s inspiration from other choirs. All in all a very successful and enjoyable day.”

You can enjoy their success with them when they perform at the Adastra Hall, Keymer Road, Hassocks, on Saturday at 7.30pm – a fusion of show, Latin-American and jazz numbers, plus their competition songs.

Tickets: Adults £8; children/students £2 from QD Stationers, Keymer Rd, Hassocks Tel: 01273 846978 or on the door.
