Spokeswoman Tessa Drew said: “4SIGHT (West Sussex Association for the Blind) is a registered charity which started in 1921 and provides services for blind and visually-impaired people, their carers and supporters across the county. 4SIGHT works in the gaps between health and social services, aiming to combat social isolation, encourage independence and confidence.

“It is estimated by the West Sussex PCT that there will soon be over 20,000 people with sight loss or low vision in West Sussex. Over 500 people are registered blind or partially sighted every year.

“4SIGHT’s team of staff and over 500 volunteers support 40 clubs, resource centres in Crawley, Shoreham by Sea, Bognor Regis and Burgess Hill, home visits, Exhibition days, low-vision assessments and the nurse-led listening and information support in the eye clinics at Worthing and St Richard’s Hospitals.

“The annual running costs of the West Sussex charity for blind and partially-sighted people are over £500,000, with most being raised from voluntary and corporate donations, fundraising events and a charity shop.”
