DVD review: Black or White (7 out of 10)

It may seem incredible that in the 21st Century racism and prejudice still exists, and is likely to do so for some while to come.

But, thankfully, this pernicious part of society is constantly being flagged up and exposed in various high quality films.

Black or White takes a slightly different stance on the subject, but gets the full treatment by one of Hollywood’s high profile stars.

Kevin Costner stars in this movie and is backed up by the talented Octavia Spencer to provide a real driving force behind the film.

Costner plays Elliot Anderson, whose wife has just died in a car crash.

He and his wife have been bringing up their bi-racial grand-daughter Eloise. Their daughter died in child birth and the father, who had drug problems, disappeared soon after.

However Anderson, who has a drink problem, entirely relied on his wife to bring Eloise up; he doesn’t even know how to brush her hair.

Spencer plays Rowena Jeffers, the other grandmother who starts a legal battle to get custody of Eloise.

There are various legal twists and turns but the basis of the story revolves around the prejudices that come to the fore.

It’s a heart-wrenching story at times, especially as Jillian Estell as Eloise is so good in her role.

Films like this may not be able to eradicate prejudice and racism, but at least they place the problems firmly in front of us.
