Entering creative possibilities in art

Crossings, featuring the work of Ann Johnson at the Hop Gallery in Lewes, provides a glimpse into the vast territory of creative possibilities offered by drawing and painting.

Spokeswoman Diana Hitchin said: “Ann approaches painting and drawing as an on-going adventure and seeks to take risks with colour and mark-making in a range of media. This exhibition features working drawings alongside oil and acrylic paintings which feed into each other but do not duplicate. The results often show only a tiny fraction of shared origins between works.”

Ann paints in two ways: oil on canvas and acrylic on paper. The acrylic paintings are usually smaller than the oils, the paint being generously, quickly and spontaneously applied. The oils are more measured in thought and process, with each painting evolving through several transformations before completion, she explains. Ann has recently returned to the adventure of drawing.

Her paintings are largely about rhythm and tension, the goal being to get colour, shape, tone and mark to dynamically work together. Influences come from a number of painters but she continues to value the thoughts of Ben Hartley: “Neatness is seldom the painter’s friend.”
