George is a record breaker at Central Sussex College

After a sleepless night, George, aged 18 from Haywards Heath, was thrilled to learn that he had scored A grades in Biology, Physics and Maths, an A* in Chemistry and a B grade in AS Level Further Maths.

He has accepted an offer from Downing College, Cambridge to read Natural Sciences later this year, and has ambitions to go into biochemical research in the future.

George (pictured below) said: “I’m the first person from my family to go to university and everyone is so proud of me – my mum wouldn’t stop hugging me! I’m just ridiculously happy right now!”

This year’s pass rate was the highest in the college’s history, with 99.7 per cent of students passing their exams – compared to 98.1 per cent nationally.

Vice Principal of the campus, Richard Hailstone was delighted with the students’ achievements, saying: “Results

this year are excellent, both in terms of overall success and individual performances from some of the fantastic

students here.

“We are delighted that 73.4 per cent of A Level students achieved top grades of A* to C and 33 out of 36 subjects saw a 100 per cent pass rate.

“There are also numerous examples of individual excellence, including the 24 individual students who achieved three or more A* and A grades and the four outstanding students who will now be taking up places at Oxbridge, as well as all those who have exceeded their own personal expectations.”

This year, the college welcomed new Principal Sarah Wright in January and completed the final phase of its campus redevelopment in March.

Places in September are still available for courses at the college’s campuses in Haywards Heath, Crawley, East Grinstead and Horsham.
