‘A Light in the Stable’ tells the Christmas story through a blend of original settings and well-known carols. The familiar Gospel words are interspersed with a range of new material, including the lively ‘Glory to God’; ‘Sing Lullaby’, in which Mary foreshadows the events of Jesus’ life; and the reflective ‘A Light for Today’, an evocation of the Nativity tableau.

Alan Bullard is a British composer, known mainly for his choral and educational music.

This UK premiere of ‘A Light in the Stable’ takes place just two days after the world premiere in Minnesota, USA.

Musical director Ian Assersohn said: “One of the many attractions of Alan Bullard’s new cantata is that it includes an opportunity for audience participation. The words will be inside the programme and we are going to end the first half of the concert with a short rehearsal, so that the audience can practise their part in advance of the performance in the second half.”

The programme begins with four more traditional carol settings from some of the great carol composers and arrangers plus Karl Jenkins’ ‘A Celebration of Christmas’.

The concert marks the debut of Concordia Singers’ new regular accompanist Jan Assersohn and they will be joined for the first time by the talented flautist Wendy Berry.

Concordia’s spring concert will be Mozart’s Requiem and new members would be welcome to join when rehearsals start at Crawley URC, Worth Park Avenue, Pound Hill, Crawley, on January 8 (7.30pm to 9.45pm), continuing every Thursday after that.
