Museum’s latest exhibition shows doctor’s award-winning bird photos

It’s part of the amazing archive of Dr Nowell Peach (1914-2012) – one of this country’s leading bird photographers.

Dr Peach’s family donated the archive to the museum in 2013, and it has just finished being catalogued.

The images on display form a tantalising cross-section of his superb natural history recording.

Dr Peach was a member of the Zoological Photographic Club, whose membership was limited to just 28 people.

The exhibition features a mixture of black and white and colour images, and includes striking shots of a barn owl with its prey and the sight of a Sardinian Warbler feeding an interloping Cuckoo chick.

Dr Nowell Peach is remembered as a man who undertook important research into tropical illnesses while a prisoner-of-war in the Far East between 1942 and 1945. He used his spare time to memorise an entire copy of Gray’s Anatomy.

For many years he worked at the Park Surgery in Horsham, until his retirement in 1978.

Birds of a Feather: Photographs by Nowell Peach’ opens on February 5 and closes on April 6.
