Photos pour in for competition

PHOTOGRAPHIC entries have been pouring in as submissions closed for this year’s 14th National Open Art Competition in Chichester.

Judging this year will once again be headed by Gavin Turk of YBA notoriety, supported by Catherine Lampert, former director of the Whitechapel Gallery in London; Lisa Wright, 2009 NOAC winner: Francis Hodgson FT photographic critic: and David Barrie is a lay judge.

Spokeswoman Louisa Higgs said: “Photography has long been considered the poor relation within the visual arts family. Alongside the other disciplines painting drawing and sculpture, photography has struggled to gain recognition and street credibility. Now however photography has reached the platform ready to accompany its visual art peers.

“It is now one of the most popular art forms in the world, mainly due to the advent of digital technology making it more accessible. We can now take photographs on our phones giving us reportage-style images which can be uploaded in seconds on to Facebook, Twitter, websites and blogs and click we have a global audience.

“The National Open Art Competition is delighted to be one of the first open art competitions to include photography alongside drawing, painting, original prints, and wall assemblages as one of the medium criteria.”

The National Open Art Exhibition will be showing at The Minerva Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre from October 30-November 13. The second Chichester Art Lecture will be on October 30, 7.30pm - The Hollywood History Of Art, given by Sir Christopher Frayling.
