Rhythm and Latin mixed infor jazz night

The accent will be on melodic rhythm plus a strong Latin influence when the John Crawford Quintet visits Chichester Jazz Club.

Club chairman Hugh Ashton said: “Independent Music Award nominee John Crawford was born in London of English and Spanish parentage and has grown up with a love of Latin and South American music. He has worked with a host of leading names in the field of Latin and was a founding member of the popular band Grupo X.

“A highly-versatile musician, Crawford has also worked with an impressive list of UK jazz talent and has also done pop session work, most notably with Tanita Tikaram. His knowledge of Latin piano styles has led to him co-authoring the book Exploring Latin Piano.

“His 2012 release, Ulia River of Time, is Crawford’s recording debut as a leader and is a reflection of his love of the Latin and South American music genre. Encompassing a range of Latin and other styles the programme consists of covers of tunes by leading jazz and Latin composers. The result is a warm, bright album with inventive arrangements, sensitively interpreted by the excellent playing of his core quintet.

“For this concert, John on piano will be supported by Uruguayan guitarist Guille Hill, percussionist Andres Ticino, bassist Gilli Lopes and drummer Eduardo Marques.

“Hear them all perform at The Pallant Suite, South Pallant, Chichester on Friday, March 21 where the music starts at 7.45pm and doors open at 6.30pm.”

Advance tickets can be bought at Chichester’s TIC Office, The Novium, Tower Street; 01243 775888; more details on www.chichesterjazzclub.co.uk.
