Scholarshipis available

A prestigious new scholarship is now available for students wanting to study at West Dean College from 2014.

The Edward James Foundation Anniversary Scholarship will be awarded to a gifted student who shows talent and potential in their studies and future career as a conservator, artist or maker.

Edward James, founder of the College, was a strong supporter of young and emerging artists and craftspeople and this new scholarship follows in the tradition he established.

Spokeswoman Irene Caswell said: “The Edward James Foundation Anniversary Scholarship is just one measure introduced by West Dean College to help make postgraduate study more accessible. Since undergraduate fees were increased in 2011, West Dean has seen a marked uplift in students needing financial support to continue in higher education.

Lorna Calcutt, conservation of ceramics programme leader at West Dean, explained: “Without additional funding, many students will decide not to study at postgraduate level. Unless postgraduate study becomes more accessible, the impact on our heritage - nationally and internationally - will be felt in years to come, when the lack of conservators trained to the highest standard will really be felt.”

West Dean College offers several other scholarships and bursary funding for potential students. West College is also reviewing the structure of its programmes to encourage more students into postgraduate study, for example, partnerships with potential employers or the feasibility of offering part-time study.
