Supper, secrets and suspense as two successful authors come to Ditchling

The author of the international bestseller When God Was A Rabbit, Sarah Winman, will be discussing her latest novel, A Year of Marvellous Ways, at The Book Lovers’ Supper Club in The Barn, Ditchling, on Wednesday, November 25.

This captivating piece of storytelling is set in the wilds of Cornwall in the aftermath of World War II and tells the story of an unlikely friendship between an old woman coming to the end of her life, and a young soldier who sees little point in going on with his.

Appearing with Sarah is Steyning author Debbie Howells, whose debut novel The Bones of You was in the slush pile when her agent spotted it. It sparked a bidding war, saw rights sold in six countries and is Pan MacMillan’s hotly-tipped autumn thriller.

The plot centres around an 18-year-old girl called Rosie Anderson, who disappears from her idyllic village.

This is the third anniversary of the Book Lovers’ Supper Club, which was set up by journalist and author Melanie Whitehouse.

“I wanted to create an event for those in mid Sussex who share my love of food and passion for books,” said Melanie.

“There is nothing else like this in mid Sussex and authors love coming to our unique and historic venue on Ditchling village green.

We’ve had a brilliant three years and attracted some top writers – Kate Mosse, Emma Healey, Sophie Hannah, William and Virginia Nicholson, Daisy Waugh, Erin Kelly, Dorothy Koomson, Judy Astley, Helen Lederer, Penny Junor and Kate Hamer, to name but a few – and I’ve got some new and different treats in store for 2016.”

Doors open at 6.45pm.

The Barn is in Lodge Hill Lane, Ditchling.

Tickets cost £25 from tabl.com (plus booking fee), Ditchling Post Office and The Mint House, Hurstpierpoint.
