Archway Theatre reveals dark side of 18th century society with The Beggar’s Opera

The show will be at the venue from Tuesday, October 27, to Saturday, November 7.

The Beggar’s Opera tells the tale of Peachum, a thief-taker and informer who conspires to send the dashing and promiscuous highwayman Macheath to the gallows.

It became the theatrical sensation of the 18th century as John Gay turned conventions of Italian opera upside-down.

He used traditional popular ballads and street tunes, while also indulging in political satire at the expense of the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole.

John Gay’s original depiction of the thieves, informers, prostitutes and highwaymen in the slums and prisons of the London underworld proved highly successful at exposing the dark side of a corrupt and jaded society.
