Top writers at literary festival

Joanna Trollope, P D James, the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, Edmund de Waal, Ann Patchett, Colin Thubron, Michael Frayn and many more will all be appearing at the 2011 Charleston Festival, the annual literary and cultural Festival which takes place in Charleston Farmhouse, the Sussex home of the Bloomsbury Group artists Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell (May 20-29).

Charleston was the meeting place of a remarkable group of progressive individuals, including Virginia Woolf, E M Forster, Maynard Keynes, Roger Fry, Lytton Strachey and T S Eliot.

Spokeswoman Philippa Rowson said: “The Festival was founded in 1989 - after Charleston was preserved and opened to the public - in order to ensure that it remained vibrant and hospitable to new ideas and contemporary creativity. Charleston is now a unique museum with a high-profile festival, a fitting tribute to its original residents, rather than a mere shrine, which is the fate of so many other homes of famous artists.

“The Charleston Trust, the registered charity that runs the festival, relies entirely on the generosity of corporate sponsors, individual supporters and festival-goers to make the magic of the festival happen each year.”
