Walkway is topic of talk

Tony Kirkham, who has worked at Kew since 1978 and has been the head of the arboretum for ten years, will give the annual Alitex lecture at the Walled Garden at Cowdray, Midhurst on September 7 at 8pm.

Spokeswoman Georgina McLaren said: “ Tony will be talking about the incredible tree-top walkway at Kew – Rhizotron and Xstrata Treetop Walkway - from inspiration to installation, which has become the most compelling tree-top experience in the UK, taking you from under the ground to wander 18 metres up in the tree canopy.

The talk is being held on 7 September at 8pm at the historic Walled Garden at Cowdray, Midhurst, West Sussex.  The Walled Garden at Cowdray will open at 7.30 for viewing before the talk.  Tickets are £10, contact Alitex at [email protected] or telephone 01730 826 900 to reserve your place.

The Walled Garden at Cowdray features a traditional greenhouse built by Alitex, designed to be in keeping with the historic Walled Garden, which has a protected Ancient Monument listing. 

Tony Kirkham, and his team of over thirty staff and students, are responsible for managing more than 14,000 trees in the living collection at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.  Tony has completed many expeditions with RBG Kew including collecting trips in East Asia with the aim of adding to RBG Kew’s tree collection and replacing trees that were lost in the storm of 1987.
