What’s on - August Bank Holiday weekend

Thousands of people will be heading towards the Sussex/Surrey border over the Bank Holiday for the 10th Wings and Wheels event.

On Saturday and Sunday (August 23/24) Dunsfold Aerodrome will once again play host to a five-hour airshow and two-hour motorshow.

There will also be dozens of static exhibitions, with second world war vehicles, simulators, retail outlets, plus a wide range of food and drink on sale.

Among the highlights this time will be the last airworthy Avro Vulcan putting on a display.

Eight aircraft from the Second World War will grace the skies above the Aerodrome in a two section flypast. All these aircraft have history with Dunsfold Aerodrome as well as having played vital roles in the Second World War and will display on both days.

The ever-popular Red Arrows are due to appear on Sunday, plus radio-controlled versions will provide plenty of entertainment. For full details see the website: www.wingsandwheels.net/

The 28th Rudgwick Country Show will be held on all three days across the Bank Holiday.

Spread over a 44 acre site off the A281, the show will have the usual steam traction engines but masses more entertainment for the family.

There will be a 6,000 sq ft craft marquee and food fair.

Rocky the Owl flying display will be held and there will be a mini beer festival.

Rabbits, poultry and chickens will be on show and for sale and there will be The Ferguson marquee and Triumph Motorcycle Club along with many other points of interest.

Cakes, animals and even a bouncy castle will be coming to Horsham this weekend. Holbrook Animal Rescue Centre is holding a fun-day on Sunday (August 24) to raise money for animal charities across the globe as well as their own centre. The afternoon will see a host of different events including dog shows, a raffle and more than 20 different stalls selling food and crafts as well as items for pets and animals. There will also be different animals from the centre at the event for children to meet along with a bouncy castle. The fun day will be held in the field in Old Holbrook Road and will be sign posted to help people find it. It will be starting at 12 noon but guest are welcome to help set up at 10.30am.

Arundel Festival is still in full swing, so why not try out the famous Gallery Trail. There are also with large scale events at the Castle, a theatre trail and a programme of events at Arundel Jailhouse. http://www.arundelfestival.co.uk/

Gardens open:

Nymans house and gardens - Handcross.

Set in the High Weald with splendid views, the garden is a series of experimental designs with spectacular planting and beauty all year. The house, transformed into a Gothic mansion in the 1920s, burnt down shortly after, leaving romantic ruins. The remaining rooms are unexpectedly charming, filled with flowers from the garden as Anne Messel, Countess of Rosse had them. Ancient woods beyond the garden dip into the valley, with walks among avenues, wild flowers, the lake and cascades.

High Beeches Garden - Handcross.

27 acres of magnificent woodland and water gardens, full of rare, exotic and unusual plants; RHS award winning plants, a botanical treasure trove, and one of the great gardens of Sussex.

Borde Hill - Ardingly. Borde Hill Garden is nestled in 200 acres of English Heritage listed Sussex parkland and woodland, with wonderful views across the Sussex Weald and the magnificent Ouse Valley. Borde Hill Garden is home to a nationally important collection of rare shrubs, champion trees and exotic plants.

Wakehurst Place - Ardingly

How about a nostalgic trip on a steam train?

Bluebell Bluebell Railway - Sheffield Park. The Bluebell Railway is a heritage line running for 11 mi along the border between East and West Sussex, England. It uses steam trains which operate between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead, with intermediate stations at Horsted Keynes & Kingscote.

SATURDAY

Summer Brocante: Wisborough Green, On The Green. More than 70 hand picked exhibitors all homed in a beautiful traditional marquee on the green. French brocante, decorative antiques, antique painted furniture, vintage home wares, antiques textiles, antique haberdashery and clothing, time worn garden pieces, clothing, accessories, country interiors, plants and more. Catstravaganza: Cats Protection Horsham & District Branch will be holding this popular event at North Heath Hall, St. Marks Lane, Horsham, from 2pm to 4pm. On sale will be home-made cakes, CP gifts and goodies, crafts, jewellery, books, CDs and DVDs, and refreshments will be available. There will be a soft toy lucky dip with a guaranteed prize every time plus the chance to win cash prizes on the Treasure Board. There will also be an information table where you can pick up free leaflets on cat care and a screen show of cats looking for homes. SUNDAY

NGS garden opening: Cuckfield Lane, Colwood House, Warninglid. Mr and Mrs Patrick Brenan, 01444 461831, [email protected]. £5 admission, children free, 2pm to 5pm. Visitors also welcome by appointment, May to August, for groups of 10+. 12 acres of garden with mature and specimen trees form the late 1800s, lawns and woodland edge. Cut turf labyrinth and forsythia tunnel.

MONDAY

FETE: Wisborough Green Bank Holiday Traditional Fete and Flower Show. Fun for all the family. This year’s event will have all the family’s favourites including: a huge range of traditional fete stalls, the beautiful vintage children’s swing boats, the fun dog show, the horticultural and craft marquee and traditional races for the young (and not so young). Starts 1pm on the village green, with the dog show judging and children’s races beginning at 2pm. http://www.wisboroughgreen.org/.

Car boot sale: Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club’s popular event for buyers and sellers. Lots of bric-a-brac, plants, books, clothes and curios will be on sale in Storrington Library car park from 8am until 12pm. Free for buyers. An Afternoon Tea is planned for Bank Holiday Monday, 2.30pm until 4.30pm, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of WW1. It will take place at the Adastra Hall in Keymer Road, Hassocks, where local concert party Friends and Neighbours will be your host. The cost is a very reasonable £2.50 (£1.50 child) and advance tickets are now on sale at Pavilion Electrics in Keymer Road, Hassocks or by ringing 01273 845291. The last tea will be served at 4pm.
