The Haywards Heath garden won Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice award, meaning it is recognised by the site as being in the top 10 per cent of attractions worldwide.

Karen Manton-Cook, executive manager at Borde Hill, said: “We are thrilled to receive the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, and for Borde Hill Garden – a peaceful oasis in the heart of Mid Sussex – to be voted within the top 10 per cent of attractions worldwide, which is wonderful for both us and the wider community.

“The award has given our hard-working team a huge boost in these challenging times. The small garden team strive to present the 17 acres of formal garden ‘rooms’ to an exceptionally high standard and worked throughout lockdown to ensure the garden was ready for visitors when we reopened.

“Since opening we have put precautionary measures in place to keep our visitors, staff and volunteers safe, to include a pre-booked timed ticketing system to ensure social distancing on arrival can be maintained, a suggested one way route around the garden, enhanced hygiene procedures and a takeaway menu from The Gardeners’ Retreat Café.

“The formal garden ‘rooms’ offer visitors the opportunity to relax and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature, which is a wonderful antidote to the pressures of modern life.

“We have welcomed so many visitors since reopening who have perhaps not visited the garden for 20 to 30 years, and they are surprised by the quality of our visitor offer and have felt moved to share their feelings on Trip Advisor. Online feedback is incredibly valuable and we thank all those who take the time to share details of their visit.”
