Crawley STEMfest

THOUSANDS of pupils throughout the South East will get an exciting, fun-filled insight into the worlds of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at a festival this summer.

Crawley STEMfest 2012 is organised by STEM Sussex, the outreach department of the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Brighton and in partnership with Crawley Borough Council and Central Sussex College.

It will give young people the opportunity to learn about the latest innovations and developments, interact with local businesses and discover more about potential career paths. Teachers will also get the chance to forge links with local companies.

Henry Smith, Conservative MP for Crawley, said: “This opportunity for young people and companies to forge links through further and higher education is an investment for the future and has my wholehearted support.”

Crawley STEMfest will take place in schools and STEM Clubs from May to July and will involve thousands of young people, parents and teachers.

It will culminate in the Big Bang South East regional fair at Crawley’s The Hawth on July 5 as part of the nationwide Big Bang Programme, the biggest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK, featuring hands-on workshops and innovative shows for students aged nine to 19.

The programme of activities will also provide the backdrop to the regional heats of the National Science & Engineering Competition, which recognises and celebrates the achievements of young people in STEM.
