A-levels: Girls defy '˜tougher A-levels' warning

More than 80 per cent of girls at the school, in Keymer Road, earned A*-B grades, a slight rise on last year’s results, and the figures for those earning A*/A grades rose from 48 per cent to 59 per cent.

Nick Dyson, head of Sixth Form said staff were “absolutely delighted” by the students’ achievements.

He added: “Their passion for learning and dedication to subjects has clearly paid off.

“It is so pleasing to see such a tight-knit year group fare so well; this is the culmination of two years of hard work and I wish our girls all the very best at their universities of choice.”

Headteacher Kathryn Bell added: “Our girls have met the challenges put before them to achieve higher standards than they may have ever dreamt possible, and to do their very best.

“They have produced an outstanding set of results alongside their commitments to the school community.

“They have made the most of all the opportunities on offer. They have broadened their mindset and grown into unique and powerful individuals.”

Mrs Bell added: “My heartfelt congratulations to all the girls; we will miss their enthusiasm and energy and wish them all a bright future – they certainly deserve it.”

Teresa Fu achieved A* grades in mathematics, further mathematics, physics and art. In October, she will take up a place to read Architecture at the University of Bath.

Head Girl, Nikita Kandwala from East Grinstead, achieved an A* in Spanish and A grades in Latin and English literature.

She also earned an A* in her Extended Project Qualification, in which she investigated the extent to which emojis and emoticons constitute a bona fide language.

Nikita will read Spanish and Linguistics at Hertford College, University of Oxford.

Deputy Head Girl Elizabeth Fuller, from Hassocks, achieved A*/A/A in geography, biology and history respectively, as well as an A* in her Extended Project Qualification with a geographical focus.

She will read geography at Durham.

Georgiana Kloos, from Seaford, received an A* in mathematics and A grades in further mathematics and physics. She will attend the University of Bristol to read Aerospace Engineering.

With an A* in Spanish, and two further A grades in French and mathematics, Matilda Loughton, from Burgess Hill, earned a place at Gonville and Caius, University of Cambridge, where she will read Modern and Medieval Languages.

Chloe Shilton, from Lindfield, received an A* in media studies and A grades in English literature and fine art.

Following a work experience stint with Burberry, she will go on to study her first choice course, fashion journalism, at London College of Fashion, University of Arts, London.

Both Caroline Welford and Alicia Critchley take up places to study one of the most competitive courses, medicine.

Alicia, from Burgess Hill, gained A* in biology and A grades in chemistry and physics and is off to the University of Cardiff.

Caroline, from Horsted Keynes, achieved straight A grades in biology, chemistry and mathematics, which confirm her place at the University of Southampton.

Phoebe Izzard-Davey, from Cuckfield, can pursue her passion for radio production, as she takes up a place to read Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Another Cuckfield success, Beth Howell, is off to read English Literature at the University of Exeter.

Isabel Widdowson, from Burgess Hill, earned A grades in business studies, drama and theatre studies and religious studies.

Together with an A* in her Extended Project Qualification, Isabel won a place at her first choice university, Nottingham, to read International Management.
