The Avenue Surgery in London Road, Burgess Hill, said it made the decision to shut to patients as a ‘precautionary measure’.

A sign was seen on the surgery’s doors this morning (March 10), confirming the surgery was ‘closed until further notice’.

It added: “Please ring later this afternoon to rebook appointments.”

The Middy contacted the surgery to confirm the closure. In response, Sean Wheatley, practice manager, said: “We have closed as a precautionary measure. A locum doctor that is not employed by the practice and who does additional shifts was with someone over the weekend and that person called her to say that they have been tested positive for coronavirus.

“We shut today for precautionary measures until we got advice.

“We were advised by the Mid Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group that no action needs to be taken and that the locum is not a confirmed case.

“The NHS 111 was excellent and the CCG. The advice has been very clear and straightforward.

“It is one of those things – we just needed to seek advice – the safety of our patients and staff is paramount.”

Mr Wheatley confirmed the locum doctor was self-isolating.
