Covid-19 case rates in most parts of England have dropped to their lowest level since before the start of 2021, latest figures show.

Data suggests that the England-wide lockdown introduced on 5 January is now having an effect, with week-on-week rates starting to fall in many regions.

This is how rates currently compare across the country, based on statistics from Public Health England (PHE).

Covid case rates compared

London

As of 20 January, the rolling seven day rate in London stood at 557.8 Covid cases per 100,000 people.

This marked a huge decrease from 770.6 on the previous week, and the lowest since the seven days to 16 December 2020.

Eastern England

Seven day Covid case rates currently stand at 437.9 per 100,000 in eastern England, which is down from 561.4 in the week up to 13 January.

Currently, case rates in the region are at their lowest level since 17 December.

South England

Both the south east and south west of England are at their lowest level since before New Year’s Day.

In the south east, the rate is currently 409.9 per 100,000, which is down week-on-week from 535.7 and the lowest since 18 December.

In the south west, the rate now stands at 281.1 per 100,000. This is down from 351.1 and marks the lowest level since 30 December.

North England and the Midlands

The picture across parts of northern England and the Midlands is much more mixed.

Figures show that rates are down in every region, but not every area has reached the levels last seen at the end of 2020.

In the North West, Covid-19 rates currently stand at 441.3 cases per 100,000, which is down slightly from 557.3 from the previous week, and the lowest level since 1 January.

Rates in the West Midlands are slightly higher, with the latest figures recording a rate of 524.8. This is down from 556.6 on the previous week and again marks the lowest level since 1 January.

However, both these regions did not see rates rise quite as sharply during the second half of December in comparison to southern and eastern England. As such, this explains why the week-on-week fall in rates is not quite as steep.

In the East Midlands, the rate is currently 386.5 cases per 100,000, which marks a slight drop from 410.2 in the week before.

Meanwhile, North East England has seen its rate fall ever so slightly, from 343.7 to 317.5, over the course of seven days.

Yorkshire and the Humber

Yorkshire and the Humber continues to hold the record for the lowest Covid-19 case rate of any other region in England, with rates currently at 241.2 per 100,000.

This is down from 286.1 from the previous week.
