Councillor Christine Costin, of Horsham District Council, is calling for people to be sensible and take their rubbish home with them.

She said: “[I have] extreme concern about how people are disposing of their disposable masks during this pandemic.

“Disposable equipment of any kind, including masks must not be carelessly tossed away because they can kill wildlife and pollute the natural environment.”

Mrs Costin urged people to use a designated clinical collection bin if working in the NHS or if not to have a separate bag handy to put used masks in.

She added: “Take them home and put them in with household waste.”

Clearing up after yourself is about looking after others, Mrs Costin said.

She added: “I don’t know why people are being so careless.”

County Times readers took to this newspaper’s Facebook page urging people to act responsibly in reaction to a photo of a discarded mask.

Fiona Bravery said: “What is wrong with people? Take it home and put it in the bin.”

Sheila Stocker added: “Disgusting – they are littered all over the place.”

Joyce Johnson slammed the actions of those who drop masks as ‘pure laziness’.

She added: “I’ve seen loads thrown on the ground.”
