And Aida Brooker did the deed in front of chidren at Waterfield Primary School in Bewbush where she works as a teaching assistant.

“The children all thought it was amazing,” said Aida, 52.

“They were all ‘wow’ and telling their mothers about it.

“They were saying ‘mum, mum, look.’

“One of them said: ‘Mrs Brooker you are so brave. I’m so proud of you’.”

Also proud was Aida’s sister Salome Gomez, who lives in the Dominican Republic, when she heard what Aida had done.

“It was the only way to show my sister how much I love her,” said Aida.

“She was in tears and said ‘I didn’t realise you were going to do that for me’.”

Aida’s lopped locks have been presented to the Little Princess Trust which provides wigs and hair pieces for children who suffer hair loss because of cancer treatment.

Meanwhile, Aida’s feat has also raised nearly £600 for the Macmillan organisation which provides free support and advice for people going through cancer.

Aida, who lives in Bewbush, says she now plans to keep her hair short for the summer after her husband Colin told her the new cropped look suited her.

“But I might grow it again for the winter,” she added.

“The main reason I had it cut was for my sister. She had a breast removed because of the cancer and went to America for treatment.

But it has spread. She was having a lot of chemo but it was failing, it was hurting her heart and they decided to stop it.”

Aida has not been able to see her sister for the past 10 years but keeps in regular contact by WhatsApp.“We talk most of the time.”

As well as her daughter Phoenix, who was among the children who watched her mum’s head shave at Bewbush Primary School, Aida has three sons aged between 14 - 29.

Husband Colin, she said, was really supporting her - and her sister. “He’s really amazing and really proud of me.”
